Grace of a Woman released April 28th 2014

http://elephantrevival.com

This five-piece folk band from Colorado play indie bluegrass with sensitivity and mystery -And at its heart is the mesmeric Bonnie Paine, the woman with the washboard.’ – 4*  The Guardian

Just announced!!
Elephant Revival will be playing at RED ROCKS with Devotchka, Gregory Alan Isakov & The Colorado Symphony

Elephant Revival formed on the banks of Spring Creek in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and then relocated to Nederland, Colorado in fall of 2006. The five members of Elephant Revival share a deep commitment to certain ideals: community, recognising one’s place in the flow of the natural world, harmony. Elephant Revival took its name from a news item that (multi-instrumentalist) Dango Rose had read, where two elephants that had lived together for 15 years were separated by zookeepers; within days, both had passed. The idea that one should recognise and celebrate the unseen connections of spirit that flows between all things on this Earth animates everything the band does. For a band of five individuals, all of whom contribute songs, there is a consistency in expressing those shared values. In the song from which the album’s title is culled, “Remembering A Beginning,” Bonnie Paine, one of the band’s three primary vocalists and multi-instrumentalist, sings of the unity of all things.  Adding his talents to the “natural confluence” was producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Johnny Flynn, Gossip), who recorded the band at his Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington.

Rodriguez also penned and sings the band’s first single from the album, “Grace Of A Woman.” In this song, Rodriguez both pays homage to the physical sacrifice that women undertake that allows us all to be here, but also to the female energy, both loving and creative, that balances out the male energy that so dominates the present world, all wrapped in an infectious tune that is utterly joyous. Rodriguez, as have all members of the band, has sacrificed material comfort for the sake of the dream of playing music. After a stint as a college basketball player, he committed to music, running sound at a club (where he met Paine after a show she played there; they climbed on to the roof of the club and played music until the sun came up). After the club closed, he went west to join Paine and the other, living for a time in a truck and for a time in a teepee.

“Grace Of A Woman’ which has some electric guitar, touches the ensemble sound and eclectism of the songs reminded one of The Pentangle who could switch from folk to rock to jazz at the tip of a hat.” – Americana UK

Album Out: 17th March 2014

Well worth a listen to anyone with a fondness for the ‘folk’ element of ‘folk-rock.” –PopMatters

“Thoughtfully constructed, classy and immediate, this is an album of many shades and moods.” – Songlines

“A captivating contribution to the Americana category.” – R2 Magazine

“Musically, this is a refreshing and fascinating album with a multitude of ideas and styles all integrated to make an attractive and original sound.” – Country Music People

Parker Millsap, ‘the Okie phenom, is way better than he should he should yet be, with that baby face and no license to drink.’ (Austin American Stateman) releases ‘Old Time Religion.’ on April 1st 2014

TT logo-new

ep album cover

“8/10” – Uncut

“With Millsap, what hits you first is the voice: soulful, gravelly, whiskey-laced, and wielded like a world-weary prophet. But it’s not just raw talent. He also demonstrates a deep affinity for the Texan school of singer-songwriters like Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, meaning that the songs are just as impressive as the performances.”  – Popmatters.com

“Parker Millsap has accumulated quite a following with his vivid storytelling and gospel-tinged inspiration..” – PASTE

‘Don’t take my word for it, simply taste and see that Parker Millsap’s music is good.’ – Maverick

http://parkermillsap.com
https://www.facebook.com/Parker-Millsap

20-year-old Parker Millsap will make you a true believer with his forthcoming self-titled debut album. An Oklahoma native brought up in the Pentecostal church, which he’s since departed, the young tunesmith delivers his religious-laced parables, character-driven narratives and relationship tales with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a preacher, restoring our faith in the power of song. Having toured with such notable artists as Old Crow Medicine Show, John Fullbright, Devil Makes Three to name a few, Millsap is a tough soul, ready to share those Oklahoma roots with the rest of the country, and, hopefully, the world.

Thirty Tigers Europe is to introduce Parker Millsap with an EP comprising two tracks from his upcoming self-titled album, ‘Old Time Religion’ and ‘The Villain’ as well as including an awe inspiring version of  ‘You Gotta Move’ recorded live at eTown. Releases from: Shooter Jennings, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter.

BCRMEDIA

When Shooter Jennings left Universal South, he first created Black Country Rock, to brand the projects he was involved in and own the music he created. But now, nearly 6 years later, the label has expanded into Nashville and Los Angeles, both of which are working in sync together to create some of the wildest projects to come down the pike in a long time.

Shooter Jennings, Twiggy Ramirez & Jamey Johnson – You Are My Sunshine LP
In Store: 31/03/2014
Genre: Country

Something dreadful happened with Jamey Johnson, Twiggy Ramirez & Shooter Jennings created this piece of music.  It can only be described as a sonic journey, the first of which takes one of the most well-known songs and reinvents it to possibly it’s true meaning using much ritual when it comes to the creation and conjuration of the music.  Side B is a mystical sound collage that takes the listener on a dark ride into the subconscious using many methods of sub sonic sound synthesis.

Tracklisting

Side A – You Are My Sunshine
Side B – There Is No Sunshine

From the first note the first lady of Outlaw Country strikes on her grand piano to the last bombastic chord of her electric band, Jessi Colter shines, overflowing with charm and charisma, and not to mention a few very personal moments. This is the first and only live record Ms. Colter has recorded and such a rare treat wouldn’t be complete with it’s own twists and turns. Jessi is joined by her son, Shooter, on a few of the tunes, such a humble performance really makes you feel lucky to be able to be there… or simulate being there by listening along.

Jonny Two Bags (aka Wickersham from Social Distortion) delivers blinding solo debut release!

J2B_Album_Cover_Revised

facebook

Digital Single, ‘One Foot In The Gutter,’ released on 24th February
Digital Album, ‘Salvation Town,’ released on 31st March

Before joining Social Distortion in 2000 after his long-time friend’s, Dennis Danell, untimely death, Jonny Two Bags (Jonny Wickersham) had already put together a formidable punk rock resume. He co-founded and cut three albums with the Cadillac Tramps, and subsequently recorded and toured with L.A punk unit Youth Brigade, as well as pro skateboarder Duane Peters’ hard-edged U.S Bombs.

Wickersham, who co-wrote several songs with Ness for Social Distortion’s albums Sex, Love and Rock ’n’ Roll (2004) and Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (2011), was also penning songs of his own during that time. He says, “I’ve always been a sideman, so I usually write songs with the hope that the singer will like what I’ve written, take it, tweak it and maybe add some verses of his own.”

After taking producer, David Kalish’s advice, Jonny Two Bags began working on his own record; ‘Salvation Town.’

Salvation Town defies expectations at every turn. The album reflects a multiplicity of music styles and influences. Wickersham’s father, a professional musician who played folk, rock n’ roll and country-rock, instilled in him a love of Southern California musicians like Warren Zevon and Linda Ronstadt. This mixed with his own taste in contemporary performers runs the gamut from Ryan Adams to Calexico, led to the soundings of ‘Salvation Town.’

The combination of Wickersham’s roots-music orientation and his dark, hyper-realistic compositions made for a stylistic shift that even the musician himself didn’t anticipate. “The finished product is not necessarily what I set out to do,” he says. ”It’s not a guitar record, and that’s something that I wouldn’t have expected.”

photo21

Produced by David Kalish, noted for his long association with Rickie Lee Jones, at his Redstar Studio in Los Angeles, the album has a diverse array of talent including Revered singer-songwriter Jackson Browne who shares vocals with Wickersham on “Then You Stand Alone,” David Lindley on four tracks, whose guitar work graced several of Browne’s classic ’70s albums, Los Lobos’ multi-instrumentalist David Hidalgo and his sons David Jr. and Vincent on “Wayward Cain” and sideman Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Eric Clapton, k.d. lang, Dave Alvin) also appears on guitar. On drums is Pete Thomas, a mainstay of Elvis Costello’s bands . Guest vocalist Gaby Moreno (recent Latin Grammy Award winner as Best New Artist) sings on “Avenues” and backup singers Terry Evans and Arnold McCuller, best known for their work with Ry Cooder and James Taylor, contribute harmonies. Wickersham’s colleagues in Social Distortion, keyboardist Danny McGough and bassist Brent Harding, join on a few tracks while Austin accordion luminary Joel Guzman and bassist/punk kingpin Zander Schloss (Weirdos, Circle Jerks, Thelonious Monster) round out the lineup.

For many, the greatest revelation of Salvation Town will be Wickersham’s accomplished, fully-realized songwriting, which grew out of his tumultuous youth in the L.A. and Orange County music scenes. Writing and recording this album of streetwise and sometimes painfully frank songs about a life lived with “one foot in the gutter and one foot kicking in the door to Heaven” proved to be somewhat of a cathartic experience.

He notes, “As I was making this record, I realized that in some of these songs I’m singing about things that happened a lifetime ago for me and that was challenging. I just accepted the fact that I needed to purge myself on this record. I wrote about things that happened when I was growing up, feelings and experiences that I have had … stuff that I have never been that open about. Even though my life is different now all of those experiences are still hanging there, just below the surface. I guess it never really goes away … those that have lived it know.”

Stephen Kellogg returns to the land of ‘Blunderstone’ to release new single, ‘Forgive You, Forgive Me,’ and to play some dates!

“Ask any group of people if their life has gone ‘exactly as they planned’
and one person (usually recently engaged) will raise their hand and say ‘yes’.
Well this song is for everybody else! In my own search for forgiveness for the
things I’ve done of which I’m not proud, I’ve found that it usually begins and
ends here. With a willingness to forgive oneself and others. It seems to be the
lynchpin that connects the things that go wrong in our daily lives to the hope and
redemption we’re all looking for.”
-Stephen KelloggSK_London2014

facebook

“For someone like this reviewer who has got really fed-up with a surfeit of singer-songwriters, it is a mark of how great this record is that I have played it so often before sitting down to review it.”Ed Jupp (www.isthismusic.com)

“It’s like he has Springsteen’s plotlines and Dylan’ microscopic attention to the details, with perhaps a dash of Jackson Browne’s gift for picking the bones of emotional wreckage.”  – Folk Radio UK

“This is top-quality blue-collar Americana…” – Dave Esson, Daily Express

In the great American tradition of musical troubadour and documentarians of society, Stephen Kellogg has been furrowing the great American roads with his band the Sixers and their brand of American rock and roll for the past decade. During that time, he has grown successful to the point of recognition of his artistic insights, to be asked to do a TED talk,  which are only reserved for respected important artists and innovators.  His theme relies on the realisation that “it was better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb, than at the top of one you don’t”.

It is striking that having lived through a challenging and changing moment in life in 2012, including the decision of the band to take a hiatus, the musical result of this tumultuous period is “Blunderstone Rookery” which also co incides with a desire to visit England and  plough his musical stories over here. Stephen will be introducing his album due for release in the UK on August 12th on Bread and Butter Music, by a special live Performance on July 11th at the Barfly.

The title of the album “ Blunderstone Rookery” comes from the boyhood home of Kellogg’s favourite character in his favourite book, “David Copperfield”.  The original title of which was “The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account”. The production of the album was shared with long time collaborator Kit Karlson and recorded in Bridgeport Connecticut – near home and mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) It comprises 11 songs including the epic masterpiece “Thanksgiving” a 10 minute song that sums up  the life of a man from birth to death, touching on love, marriage, raising a family, sickness, old age and mortality and underlines the record’s overall themes of hope, redemption and forgiveness.

Carlene Carter – Carter Girl
Release: 7th April 2014

CCARTER_91842_CG_eCVR600x600-2

The idea for Carter Girl was to include material that spans many years of Carter Family songwriting in order to show the progression, and as a result, this album covers material from three generations of Carter family music, including two songs written by Carlene herself: “Me and the Wildwood Rose, “ and “Lonesome Valley 2003,” as well as old Carter family songs which have been updated/modernised with more country styling.

Don Was (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones) both produced and played bass on the album. The album features a stellar lineup of guests including Willie Nelson on ‘Troublesome Waters,’, Kris Kristofferson on ‘Black Jack David,’, Vince Gill harmonising on ‘Lonesome Valley 2003.‘ Other guests include: Don Was, Sam Bush, Elizabeth Cook, Lori Carter Bennett and others. Della Mae Tour and UK Debut Show

Della Mae European Tour

and UK debut show!

Della Mae

“…Here’s an impressive and highly commercial blend of contemporary and traditional influences from the all-female quintet Della Mae.” – The Guardian

“The all-female Boston-based quintet are, like The Avett Brothers and Lumineers, from a new generation of talented stateside musicians delivering a modern take on country music.” – The Mirror

0001124405_20

This World Oft Can Be,’ Della Mae’s second album and Rounder debut, shows that these five multi-talented young Boston-based women are respectful of American musical tradition, but not restricted by it, combining centuries’ worth of musical influences with an emotionally tough, undeniably modern songwriting sensibility. Although the musicians’ sublime skills have already won them numerous individual honours, the album’s focus is squarely on the band’s emotionally potent songs and spirited, effortlessly expressive performances. .

The group quickly won an enthusiastic following through their high-energy live performances at festivals around the US. The band expanded its reputation with their self-released first album, 2011’s ‘I Built This Heart,’ which won an impressive amount of attention for a D.I.Y release.

Elephant Revival – These Changing Skies (Released March 17th 2014)

elephantrevivalBandShot.1
“A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.” – John Muir

The five members of Elephant Revival share a deep commitment to certain ideals: community, recognizing one’s place in the flow of the natural world, harmony. Holding on to those ideals in the midst of heady career growth and strong individual creative forces could be difficult, but they weather these storms with aplomb, and in doing so, have produced their best album to date. It is a document about striving for transcendence under These Changing Skies.

Elephant Revival formed on the banks of Spring Creek in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and then relocated to Nederland, Colorado in fall of 2006. They loved one another’s sense of shared values and the way that their disparate musical influences began to form a more cohesive tapestry the more they played together. “It really is a natural confluence of our elemental influences,” says bassist/multi-instrumentalist Dango Rose. Those elemental influences extend beyond the musical to a world view that is expressed not only through the music, but in their lyrics. That world view is connecting with fans: the band is a favorite at festivals such as Telluride and Old Settlers and is selling out theaters in their native Colorado as well as legendary rooms such as Joe’s Pub in NYC, The Ark in Ann Arbor and The Tractor Tavern in Seattle.

For a band of five individuals, all of whom contribute songs, there is a consistency in expressing those shared values. In the song from which the album’s title is culled, “Remembering A Beginning,” Bonnie Paine, one of the band’s three primary vocalists and multi-instrumentalist, sings of the unity of all things (“There’s a fire burning, in the middle of this turning/Wild and yearning/For everything, for everything/Remains inside, these changing skies/Through waves in time/Remembering”). The changing skies that she refers to are only changing in the context of outward perception; the very stuff of the universe, the energy, the matter, remains. “If we could really get to root of that,” says Paine, “we would have a lot less interpersonal and environmental struggle.” Paine also touches on a theme that is ever present in any discussion with any member of the band, that being the idea of intentionality, in the song “Willing And Able” (“I am willing and able/In the silence of our loving/All in all is recognized/Clearly knowing our intention”). As she explains, “We all clearly shape our willpower, and we try to be as loving and conscious as possible.” Paine is from Oklahoma and spent many years under the tutelage of and as a member of the backing band for the legendary Randy Crouch, who she considers the earliest important and most lasting influence on her musical sensibilities.

Singer/guitarist Daniel Rodriguez also explores the theme of living on the surface of perception while deep mystery is all about in the album’s lead track, “Birds And Stars.” He recognizes the distance between the state of human awareness and the more transcendental state that the members of Elephant Revival strive for (“The love in you it runs so deep/Upon the surface here I sleep/Walking the dark and light/Walking all the day and night”) and ends with an exhortation for the listener to reject the temporal and embrace the ecstatic (“So…out from your slumber/Into the wonder/Under the starlight and dance, dance”).

Singer/banjoist/multi-instrumentalist, Sage Cook, spends a little more time in the world, lyrically speaking, adding a more direct narrative sensibility to the band offerings. In “It’s Obvious,” Cook channels the Occupy movement, after spending some time in Zuccotti Park right as the protest was in its formative stages. Cook affirms that the power of the people to be cast asunder by the lure of consumer culture (“What’s not bought is what’s not made”) and national identity (“I heard it through the walls of the station/Steel and stone could not confine us/Beyond above the boundaries of a nation/Still no stone could quite confine us”). “Over Over And” was penned in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings with Cook struggling to comprehend the incomprehensible. Cook’s sense of community started in the farming and ranching towns of his home state of Kansas, where music was part of the fabric of life, where Haggard, jazz and even the metal bands he listened to with his friends, influenced his sensibilities.

The band’s use of folk idioms in their music is both indicative of their interests and upbringing. Fiddle player Bridget Law was born and raised in Texas and grew up playing in fiddle competitions when she was younger. “There is so much of that experience in what I bring to the band,” she says, pointing out that the drive to be great was part of fiddle competition culture, but so was developing a sense of what would be pleasing to an audience, as well as developing the improvisation skills she brings to the band’s live performances. “I still go to fiddle camp,” she adds. She was also a ballerina for a time, and she brings the dancer’s ability to channel energy through movement onstage.

Rose comes to the band from Chicago, where he was influenced by Chicago roots stalwarts Cornmeal as a teen and hanging around the Old Town School of Folk Music. He has been a voracious seeker of musical experience, also spending time in old time string bands in North Carolina and Colorado, as well as a tribal music community in Oregon. “As a band, we really, truly support one another. We’ve weathered the tribulations that come with getting in a van and being in tight quarters with the same five people, but we really have created this space where we feel safe with one another.”

Adding his talents to the “natural confluence” was producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Johnny Flynn, Gossip), who recorded the band at his Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington. “It was an amazing space to record in, a big barn with amazing acoustics,” says Rodriguez. He adds, “The band is so tight knit that it took a couple of days for everything to gel with Ryan, but once it did, it worked beautifully. He’s so sonically gifted and really captured things in the right way. The proof is in the music. We’re very proud of this album.”

Elephant Revival took its name from a news item that Rose had read where two elephants that had lived together for 15 years were separated by zookeepers. Within days, both had passed. The idea that one should recognize and celebrate the unseen connections of spirit that flows between all things on this Earth animates all the band does. These Changing Skies is not only great music, but a testament to the power of love and community.
